Peniche in spring: March to May

Spring is a good time for travellers who care more about exploring than lying on the beach all day.

March can still feel properly Atlantic: wind, showers and cooler evenings are normal possibilities. By April and May, days become longer and the town starts moving towards the summer season.

It is a good period for walking, eating out without peak-season pressure and surfing with more space.

Berlengas services tend to become more useful as the season progresses, but boat operations are weather-dependent. Never build a spring trip around a specific island day without checking current sailings.

Peniche in summer: June to August

Summer is the easiest season for a conventional holiday.

June usually gives you the best balance: long daylight hours and a lively atmosphere without the full July-August pressure. July and August bring the biggest beach crowds, busier restaurants and more demand for accommodation close to Baleal.

The Atlantic stays cool even in summer, and wind can make late afternoons feel fresher than Lisbon.

For beach days, start with our best beaches in Peniche. Baleal is the easiest all-round option; Supertubos is more exposed and should not automatically be your swimming beach just because it is famous.

Summer is the easiest period for the Berlengas, but access remains controlled through the official BerlengasPass system.

Peniche in September and October

If you ask surfers, this is where the conversation gets interesting.

Early autumn can combine pleasant weather with more consistent Atlantic swell than midsummer. September is arguably Peniche's strongest all-round month: the town is still lively, water activities are very much in season and the busiest holiday period has passed.

October is less predictable for general tourism but more attractive to surfers looking for stronger swell. It is also associated with Peniche's top-level surf competition when the World Surf League schedules its Portugal event here; check the official WSL calendar for current dates rather than assuming the event falls in the same week every year.

Peniche in winter: November to February

Winter is not the season we would choose for a first beach holiday.

It can, however, be excellent for experienced surfers. Larger Atlantic swells become more common, the beaches are far quieter and accommodation can be easier to find.

The trade-offs are obvious: shorter days, more unsettled weather, stronger wind and far fewer reasons to expect regular Berlengas boat services.

If you are coming primarily to surf, winter can make sense. If your priority is sightseeing plus beaches, choose another season.

Best time for beginner surfing

Beginners do not need the biggest or most consistent swell. Smaller conditions can be an advantage.

Late spring through summer is generally the easiest window for a first surf trip, although lesson locations are chosen day by day according to swell, tide and wind. Baleal's geography gives schools several options within a small area.

Best time for the Berlengas

For most travellers, late spring through September is the practical window. The exact operating season varies between boat operators and conditions at sea can cancel sailings even on a sunny day.

Always check the BerlengasPass website and your chosen authorised operator close to the date.

Best month overall

If we had to pick one: September.

It gives you a strong mix of beach weather, active restaurants, surf, Berlengas access and fewer crowds than August. June is a close second, especially if surfing is not central to your trip.
