Peniche is one of the easiest places in Portugal to build a surf trip around. The reason is not one single wave. It is the shape of the coast.
Within a relatively small area you have beaches facing different directions, which means wind and swell can produce very different conditions from one side of the peninsula to the other. When one spot is blown out, another may be cleaner.

Baleal
Baleal is the best starting point if you are learning.
The long sandy bay around Baleal offers several peaks and a much more forgiving setup than Peniche’s heavier reef and beach breaks. Surf schools operate throughout the area, and it is easy to rent equipment close to the beach.
Conditions can still become powerful, so “beginner-friendly” does not mean safe in every swell. If you are new to surfing, going with a school or instructor is the sensible option.

Prainha and Cantinho da Baía
The beaches immediately around the Baleal causeway can offer smaller, sheltered waves depending on wind and swell direction.
These are among the areas most commonly used by surf schools because instructors can choose the side of the bay that is working better on the day.
That flexibility matters more than chasing a famous spot when you are still learning.
Lagide
On the north side of Baleal, Lagide is a step up.
The wave can produce longer, more organised rides than the beginner peaks inside the bay and is popular with intermediate and experienced surfers. Parts of the break run over reef, so it is worth understanding the spot before paddling out.
At busy times, local awareness and basic surf etiquette matter. Do not paddle straight to the main peak if the lineup is beyond your level.
Supertubos
Supertubos is the name most surfers already know before arriving in Peniche.
Officially Praia do Medão, this exposed beach break is famous for fast, hollow waves and heavy barrels. It has hosted top-level professional competition and can be genuinely world-class when the swell, wind and banks line up.
It is not a beginner wave.
On smaller days, conditions can be less intimidating, but the character of the beach changes quickly. Strong currents, powerful shorebreak and crowded peaks are all possible.

Molhe Leste
Just north of Supertubos, Molhe Leste can offer a more organised wave beside the harbour wall.
Its setup is different from the open beach at Supertubos, and it can become busy when conditions are good. This is another spot where intermediate or experienced surfers will get more out of it than complete beginners.
Consolação
South of Supertubos, Consolação has several surf options around the point and surrounding beaches.
The area can work when other parts of Peniche are struggling with wind or swell direction, which is exactly why having a car is useful on a serious surf trip.
Some sections involve rock and reef, so check the entry, exit and tide rather than blindly following people into the water.

Do not choose your session based only on the most famous name.
Check swell direction, size, period, wind, tide and your own ability. Then look at the beaches in person. Conditions in Baleal can be completely different from Supertubos on the same morning.
