A weekend is enough to understand why Peniche works so well as a short break from Lisbon.
You will not see everything, and that is fine. The best two-day trip mixes the town with the coast rather than turning the weekend into a checklist. Give yourself time for the harbour, Cabo Carvoeiro, Baleal and one long meal. Add the Berlengas if the season and sea conditions make it realistic.

Friday evening: arrive and eat in Peniche
If you are coming from Lisbon after work, head straight to Peniche and keep the first evening simple.
Check in, walk around the centre and have dinner in town. This is a good night for grilled fish, seafood or a traditional Portuguese meal rather than driving immediately to Baleal.

Saturday morning: Peniche Fortress and the old town
Start with the historical side of Peniche.
The Museu Nacional Resistência e Liberdade, inside the fortress, is the most important cultural stop in town. The building was used as a political prison during Portugal’s Estado Novo dictatorship and now tells the story of resistance, political imprisonment and the struggle for freedom.
As of 2026, the museum publishes opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:15. Check the official museum website before your visit in case this changes.
Afterwards, walk around the harbour and central streets rather than jumping straight back into the car.
Saturday afternoon: Cabo Carvoeiro and Baleal
Drive or cycle around the edge of the peninsula towards Cabo Carvoeiro.
This is Peniche at its most exposed: low cliffs, strange rock formations and Atlantic wind with very little between you and the Berlengas on the horizon.
Then head north to Baleal.

Sunday option 1: visit the Berlengas
If you are visiting during the main boat season and the forecast is good, use Sunday for the Berlengas.
Book the boat and required access in advance. Berlenga Grande has controlled visitor numbers and access to the land area requires a BerlengasPass.
Once there, walk to the Fort of São João Baptista, swim at Carreiro do Mosteiro if conditions allow and consider a short cave tour by boat.

Allow most of the day. Do not squeeze the islands into a tiny morning window if you have a fixed commitment back in Lisbon.
Sunday option 2: surf, beach and a slow lunch
If boats are not running, the sea is rough or you simply do not want another organised activity, keep Sunday on the mainland.
Book a surf lesson in Baleal if you are a beginner, or check conditions at the different breaks if you already surf.
Not interested in surfing? Walk the beach, have a long lunch and explore Consolação or Supertubos before leaving.
This version of the weekend is slower, cheaper and often better in shoulder season.
Where should you stay for a weekend?
For a non-surfing city break, Peniche town is the easiest choice.
For a weekend built around surf or beach time, stay in Baleal. Ferrel is a good middle ground if you have a car and want quieter evenings.
